Unified Threat Management

Skip Navigation Links. Unified Threat Management is the name for an emerging trend in the firewall appliance security market. Unified threat management (UTM) refers to a comprehensive security product that includes protection against multiple threats. A UTM device typically includes a firewall, antivirus software, content filtering and a spam filter in a single integrated package called an appliance.

When hackers were the primary focus of the information system infrastructure, a good solid firewall was sufficient to protect a network. Then as viruses became more prevalent, Anti Virus Gateways were installed to scan for and stop viruses. Later other devices were installed to provide web content filtering and email spam filtering. This resulted in a multitude of devices that were costly to administer and consumed valuable rack space. The UTM device is replacing the older stand-alone firewall.

Many businesses are turning to UTM appliances because they provide broad network protection. Thus, UTMs tend to be less expensive and simpler to deploy than traditional single-function security products. However, UTM features like firewalling, anti-virus, and intrusion detection and prevention require ongoing configuration and monitoring to be effective.
